Travelling to Tahko by public transportation

From autumn to spring (August 10th 2023 to June 2nd 2024), you can get to Tahko or Nilsiä (11km from Tahko) from Kuopio and Siilinjärvi bus stations by taking Kuopio public transport’s Vilkku bus number 61. During winter, there’s also a free Skibus operating between Nilsiä and Tahko. The schedules for the season 23-24 will be released later.

From Kuopio to Tahko

• On weekdays, there is one connection per day from Kuopio bus station (at 6.45 pm).
• On Saturdays, there are two connections per day (at 10 am and 3.50 pm).

  • Trains arriving in Kuopio
• On Sundays, bus 61 does not operate to Tahko, only to Nilsiä.

From Siilinjärvi to Tahko

• On weekdays, there is one connection per day from Siilinjärvi town center (at 7.10 pm).
• On Saturdays, there are two connections per day (at 10.25 am and 4.15 pm).

  • Trains arriving in Siilinjärvi
• On Sundays, bus 61 does not operate to Tahko, only to Nilsiä.

From Kuopio or Siilinjärvi to Nilsiä

• The same bus 61 goes from Kuopio and Siilinjärvi to Nilsiä, with more frequent connections. From Nilsiä, you can continue to Tahko (11 km) by taxi.

From Tahko to Kuopio or Siilinjärvi

• On weekdays and Sundays, bus 61 does not operate from Tahko to Siilinjärvi or Kuopio, only from Nilsiä, where you need to take a taxi to reach Tahko.

• On Saturdays, there are two direct connections per day (at 11.30 am and 5.15 pm), stopping at both Siilinjärvi and Kuopio.

Recommended route from Helsinki to Tahko on weekdays

1. VR train Helsinki-Kuopio which departs from Helsinki at 11.19 am and arrives in Kuopio at 3.35 pm. Check train schedules here.
   • Vilkku bus Kuopio-Tahko departs from Kuopio at 6.45 pm and arrives in Tahko at 8.00 pm.
   • You will have a three-hour wait at Kuopio before the bus to Tahko departs. During the wait, you can, for example, have a meal at Travel Center Portti or in the city center. Baggage storage is available at the railway station’s Cafe Asema.
2. VR train Helsinki-Kuopio which departs from Helsinki at 2.15 pm arrives in Kuopio at 6.30 pm. Check train schedules here.
   • Vilkku bus Kuopio-Tahko departs from Kuopio at 6.45 pm and arrives in Tahko at 8.00 pm.

Recommended route from Helsinki to Tahko on Saturdays

1. Taxi from Tahko to Nilsiä.
   • Vilkku bus Nilsiä-Kuopio departs from Nilsiä at 8.55 am and arrives in Kuopio at 9.55 am.
   • VR train Kuopio-Helsinki which departs from Kuopio at 11.15 pm and arrives in Helsinki at 3.40 pm. Check train schedules here.
   • You will have over an hour’s wait in Kuopio. During the wait, you can, for example, have a meal at Travel Center Portti. If you want to visit the city center, baggage storage is available at the railway station’s Cafe Asema.

Recommended route from Tahko to Helsinki on Saturdays

1. Vilkku bus Tahko-Kuopio which departs from Tahko at 11.30 am and arrives in Kuopio at 12.45 pm.
   • VR train Kuopio-Helsinki which departs from Kuopio at 2.20 pm and arrives in Helsinki at 6.40 pm. Check train schedules here.
   • You will have about an hour and a half’s wait in Kuopio. During the wait, you can, for example, have a meal at Travel Center Portti. If you want to visit the city center, baggage storage is available at the railway station’s Cafe Asema.
