Cultural heritage of Nilsiä

The Nilsiä Museum, maintained by the Nilsiä Heritage and Culture Association, showcases the cultural heritage related to Nilsiä. The museum is located 8km from Tahko. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the main building and outbuildings host rotating theme exhibitions.

The museum’s extensive collection is built around objects related to the traditional peasant way of life, as well as items connected to sports, music, education, textile and handicraft hobbies, local religious life, and military history. Highlights of the collection include a replica of a woolly mammoth molar discovered in the late 1800s in Tahkolahti and collections from the Eastern Finland Sports Museum.

The museum also features a cozy café and a small museum shop, both open during museum opening hours. The main building houses the Local Heritage Center as well. The museum is open in the summer, during holiday seasons in the winter, and for groups year-round by appointment.
